Unemployment Benefits Running Out

by   Posted on July 6, 2010 in Uncategorized

Check out this video regarding unemployment benefits.  I don’t want to get political but there are some things that they mention in the video that were pretty interesting.. namely the “catch 22″ with people not spending because their benefits will run out.. but we need people to spend to jump start the economy.  Do you think we will have a double-dip recession?

They mention that there are 5 workers for every one opening.  I had recently posted a position on Career Builder for a Temporary Customer Service position available in NYC and within a few days received over 100 resumes.  The position specifies that it is only Temporary but due to the economy, people are willing to take whatever they can get.

  1. Uggh. I certainly don’t want to get too political. But I am completely against unemployment benefits. There are way too many people who abuse these priveleges. I have interviewed people who only want to work 20 hours a week so they can still collect unemployment. Not too mention the employees who call off from work so they don’t get too many hours in a week and can still collect unemployment. It’s absurd. Maybe if we pay less in taxes for these unemployment benefits then we could jump start the economy with the additional money.

  2. I feel as though it’s nice to have unemployment benefits. Think of it this way, they take this money out of your pay the entire time you are working so the benefits you are receiving are your own money. Ofcourse, in a perfect system you would only be able to collect what you put away, but we all know this isn’t the case. However, let’s change one key word to the arguement by saying that social security is the issue. We can all agree that there should be some form of social security and in that case its limited to how much you put in over your life, but there is always talk of social security running out when all of the baby boomers retire and there simply aren’t enough working Americans to support the fund. How do you feel about this?

  3. This is a very controversial topic, especially for businesses. Many employers argue that the problem is the system itself. Unemployment is for people who loose their job for no fault of their own and are currently looking for work. Yet people who are fired for lack of performance issues or attendance issues still apply and are approved for unemployment. Working with businesses on a regular basis I have heard of many instances in which employees who should not be approved unemployment are approved for it. This puts a stress on the system, and those who really should be collecting unemployment are not able to because you have so many abusers.

The worst part of it is that the PA Department of Labor and Industry denies there is a problem with the unemployment system. Until the system is fixed, it will continue to be abused. Businesses have brought this to state legislators and they are looking at what can be done to correct the problem.

There are many people that want to work and are looking for work, but it is hard for many of them to find work due to the shortage of openings. Unfortunately for these people that are deserving of unemployment they may not be able to get because of a broken system and abusers.
